Taking that first step towards assessment can be understandably daunting. We want to reassure you that by choosing WMAAAS, you will be supported from the very moment you contact to book your initial assessment.
As a neurodiversity-affirming service we ensure that all of our clinicians hold the same values about neurodiversity. In simple terms, we view autism, ADHD, and other neurological diversities as unique differences to be respected, supported and embraced. We hope to normalise neurodivergence while assisting clients to find the understanding, accommodations, and services they need.
Our friendly administration team will guide you through the process to arrange your first appointment. All self-referring clients will be invited to attend an initial assessment in the first instance. Prior to this appointment you will be asked to complete a compilation of questionnaires, which our clinician will review before meeting with you. The purpose of this appointment is to ensure that autism or ADHD assessment is appropriate, and to consider any potential differential diagnosis that may better explain your experiences. Should autism or ADHD assessment be appropriate and you decided to go ahead with formal testing, our psychologists will have prepared a bespoke assessment plan tailored to your unique individual needs.
We are committed to ensuring your assessment is a positive experience. While parts of the process can be completed remotely, all clients are asked to attend our clinic, Lyndon House in Sutton Coldfield, for at least one in-person appointment per assessment. On arrival, our friendly reception team will welcome you with refreshments.
You will be provided with a full itinerary so that you know what to expect during every stage of our assessment pathway. We also have a social story you can share with your child to make them more comfortable to with what to expect.

As our assessments comply with National Institute of Clinical Excellence, you will be allocated an assessment co-ordinator who will oversee your assessment team.
Building a Complete Picture
To provide the most accurate diagnosis, we review the "bigger picture" alongside your assessment, including medical history, school reports, and family observations. For younger children, a school observation visit may be suggested.
Privacy & Consent
We respect your privacy. With the exception of safeguarding or safety concerns, we will not contact third parties without your permission.
Please note: For children under 16, gathering information from their education setting is a required part of the diagnostic process. For all other clients, while we strongly encourage sharing this background information to avoid an inconclusive result, the final decision rests with you.
Evaluating the Multidisciplinary Team Outcome & Conclusion
Each member of your assessment team will contribute their clinical opinion to the overall assessment which will inform the final diagnostic conclusion alongside all other gathered data.
The process of evaluating each part of your assessment, other data and reaching a diagnostic conclusion will take around 6 weeks. During this time we will be also compiling your report.

At the feedback meeting your clinician will explain the diagnostic outcome to you and the reasons for the conclusion that was made. This meeting will offer opportunity to discuss the findings and to talk about any next steps to take in respect to supporting you with areas of need. Where a diagnosis of autism or ADHD cannot be made, your clinician will discuss alternative possibilities for your experiences and, where appropriate, recommendations for alternative assessment or support.
Following the feedback meeting a final section will be added to your report to summarise the discussion held and any recommendations for support, therapy or signposting to alternative services. We aim to feedback about your session within 6 weeks of completion of your full assessment. Longer timescales may occur where there are delays in receiving third-party information, or school holidays (in the case of school aged children).
A full draft report, including clinical findings and recommendations, will be shared with you within one week of this session for a factual accuracy check.
Summary Documentation & GP Notification
Upon discharge, you will receive two documents: your full detailed report and a short summary report. This summary allows you to evidence the diagnosis without disclosing sensitive personal information.

At this stage you will be discharged from the assessment pathway. However we can offer continuity of care through our post-diagnostic support pathway.
