Taking that first step towards assessment can be understandably daunting. We want to reassure you that by choosing WMAAAS, you will be supported from the very moment you contact to book your initial assessment.
As a neurodiversity-affirming service we ensure that all of our clinicians hold the same values about neurodiversity. In simple terms, we view autism, ADHD, and other neurological diversities as unique differences to be respected, supported and embraced. We hope to normalise neurodivergence while assisting clients to find the understanding, accommodations, and services they need.
Our friendly administration team will guide you through the process to arrange your first appointment. All self-referring clients will be invited to attend an initial assessment in the first instance. Prior to this appointment you will be asked to complete a compilation of questionnaires, which our clinician will review before meeting with you. The purpose of this appointment is to ensure that autism or ADHD assessment is appropriate, and to consider any potential differential diagnosis that may better explain your experiences. Should autism or ADHD assessment be appropriate and you decided to go ahead with formal testing, our psychologists will have prepared a bespoke assessment plan tailored to your unique individual needs.
There are several parts to an autism and ADHD assessment and you will be invited to meet our clinicians on a number of occasions.. To ensure you have a positive experience, you can choose whether to attend our comfortable clinic in Sutton Coldfield, or alternatively meet your clinician through our remote video platform.
For autism assessments, you will be asked to attend the clinic in person on one occasion to participate in the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS). The ADOS is a semi-structured, standardised assessment that evaluates communication and social interaction. Clients generally report finding the ADOS assessment an enjoyable experience, despite initial trepidation with not knowing what to expect.
After your assessment with our clinicians, our team will take time to review information from third-parties or sources (e.g. medical, educational and friends/family). We will always seek your consent for this information or to contact third-parties. This type of information is an important part of the process to ascertaining a diagnosis. Occasionally a lack of third-party information may result in an inconclusive outcome. Ultimately however, it is your decision about whether you wish to provide this information to us.
Once all information has been obtained, our clinicians will compile a written report. Reports are usually several pages long and summarise all information that has been provided. A draft report will be sent to you so that you can check for any inaccuracies in the information recorded. Once you have confirmed that the information within the report is accurate, our team will meet and decide on a diagnostic outcome. The diagnostic outcome will then be written into the report and you will be invited to attend a feedback meeting.
At the feedback meeting your clinician will explain the diagnostic outcome to you and the reasons for the conclusion that was made. This meeting will offer opportunity to discuss the findings and to talk about any next steps to take in respect to supporting you with areas of need. Where a diagnosis of autism or ADHD cannot be made, your clinician will discuss alternative possibilities for your experiences and, where appropriate, recommendations for alternative assessment or support. Following the feedback meeting a final section will be added to your report to summarise the discussion held and any recommendations for support, therapy or signposting to alternative services. You will receive the final report following this within approximately one week. We aim to complete all assessments within 6 weeks of your final assessment appointment. Longer timescales may occur where there are delays in receiving third-party information, or school holidays in the case of school aged children.
